Summer

When DOES summer start? With a date on the calendar? With the first trip for ice cream? When you can sleep with the windows open? Lightning bugs?

I think summer starts with that first crazy thunderstorm; you know that storm: the heat has built up during the day, then the western sky starts to look mottled, then the flash of sheet lightning. That first distant rumble of thunder. You can almost smell the lightning! Then the wind and the rain roar through, and the temperature drops 20 degrees in 20 minutes. Or, maybe, summer starts when you suddenly don't want to eat chili for a meal. Maybe, summer starts when you think going to Knoebels might be a good idea. Perhaps summer starts when you envy your friends who have a pool? Nah, for me, it's the first thunderstorm.
